Chapter 57: Scheming
failed
Li
Chang Le’s cold eyes stared at her: “I won't let you off.”
Li
Wei Yang remained calm and composed: “Dajie, a bit of wind and you don’t feel
well, so weak and incompetent. In the future, you must cherish yourself, do not
let father and mother worry for you.”
Having
said that, Li Wei Yang strutted away with Bai Zhi.
The
list of gifts bestowed by the emperor was very long, Da Furen’s hand, which
held the list clutched tightly.
“Lao
Ye, is this not too much?” On the surface, Da Furen appeared surprised by the long
list of gifts.
“These
are the rewards Bixia bestowed on Wei Yang.” Li Xiao Ran knew why Da Furen
would say so. Because the gold and jewelry here, the level of their values far
exceeded that of her dowry when Da Furen got married.
“Lao
Ye, Bixia bestowed these to the Li family.” Da Furen looked at the list, saying
each word, she couldn’t just watch Li Wei Yang gain such big benefit.
“Furen,
Bixia has said clearly that these rewards are for Wei Yang. If we don’t give it
to her, the news that spread outside will not be good.” Li Xian Ran said
slowly: “The Li family cannot afford to lose that person.”
Da
Furen thought about it, replied: “Lao Ye, the household expenditure for this
year is large. The second and third households are also using
the public funds1, adding the expenses of
festivities, welcomes and send off2 of New Year, in order
for everyone to have face, I even used my own dowry. You have always been
honest, unwilling to accept offerings from officials. If we have this money,
our financial situation can be relieved. Moreover, soon Min Feng will have to
get marry, there are also three younger sisters after Chang Le, in the future their
dowries must also be great---”
Li
Xiao Ran was embarrassed, to support such a large family, it was not an easy
thing. He subconsciously chose to ignore the income from the Li clan’s
countless stores and country estates. Similar to his wife, deep in his heart,
he was also unwilling to give this much gold and jewelry to Wei Yang. Moreover
he could feel the defiance from this child’s bones. This violated his authority
as head of the household, he felt offended. Well, Wei Yang should get a little
lesson.
Therefore,
he nodded and agreed: “Very well, I will speak to Lao Furen.”
Generally
speaking, Lao Furen should comply with Li Xiao Ran’s opinions. So when Da Furen
heard this answer, she could not help but smile in satisfaction.
He

The
sky was still clear in the afternoon. Beads of snow fell again towards evening,
rustling when they hit the glazed roofing tiles, the sound of snow dense and
anxious. After a while, soon the house could be seen covered in a
thin layer of white.
Li Xiao Ran looked at the weather, frowned and entered the residence. He saw only Lao Furen wearing a lotus green embroidered satin robe, leaning against a pillow with a red “shou” of Hunan embroidery, sitting on the couch reciting scriptures.
Li Xiao Ran looked at the weather, frowned and entered the residence. He saw only Lao Furen wearing a lotus green embroidered satin robe, leaning against a pillow with a red “shou” of Hunan embroidery, sitting on the couch reciting scriptures.
“You’re
saying that the rewards bestowed by Bixia should be used to fill the public
funds?” After hearing his words, Lao Furen twisted the Buddha beads, said
sneeringly: “It is written clearly on the imperial edict, that these things are
given to Wei Yang. Now enshrined in the ancestral hall, you don’t need me to
get someone to read it for you again.”
“Of
course I know this, but Furen she…” Li Xiao Ran did not expect Lao Furen’s face
would suddenly change, immediately turning red in the face, speechless.
“I
can rest assured when you’re dealing with government affairs on normal days,
but you are too indulgent towards the married woman of your house. Wei Yang is also
your daughter. Although born of a concubine, in my opinion, she is not inferior to
your eldest daughter. You should let go of this idea.”
Li
Xiao Ran unconsciously frowned: “How can Wei Yang and Chang Le be compared---”
“How
to compare? Coming up with ideas for Bixia to help share your burden was not
Chang Le. You need to think more clearly!” Lao Furen reminded him.
The
expression on Li Xiao Ran’s face was not good, he was obviously turning a deaf
ear.
Lao
Furen hmphed and said: “I know, Chang Le is your first daughter, pretty and
beautiful, you and Jiang Shi have placed great hope on her. However, I never
agreed. First, our Li family has always been rising in ranks as high official,
there’s no need for the thought of climbing up to be descendants of phoenixes
and dragons3. Second, Chang Le is
too arrogant. She might only bring disaster. If the Crown Prince’s position is
stable, then these two things may not obstruct anything, however the current
situation, all of the princes are not fuel-saving lights, us involving in the matters may
not have good results. Besides, after this incident, Chang Le’s reputation in
the city is a complete mess. If you still think that just this beautiful face
is enough to climb up to the empress’s position, then you need to be prepared
to put our Li family to roast in an oil bath.”
Lao
Furen’s words, had also been spoken in the past. This was also the reason why
she never liked Li Chang Le, too beautiful and arrogant, may not be the Li
family’s blessing.
“With your position now, every step, is like walking on thin ice…” Lao Furen
seemed to be muttering to herself, yet also seemed to be reminding him, “You
choosing among the emperor’s sons, Bixia may not be ignorant of it.”
Li
Xiao Ran was surprised for a moment, filling with apprehension.
His
own ideas, was it too rash?
He
couldn’t help but nod: “This situation can be laid aside naturally, but Wei
Yang---”
Lao
Furen sighed: “Her every word and deed in the hall today, they are recorded
into the annals of history. Even if you are not thinking of the honor she
brought for you, you still have to think of the pen of the historian. Is our Li
family lacking money? Why do we need to do something so low?”
Da
Furen would definitely refuse, Li Xiao Ran could feel the pain jumping on his
temple. But he dared not violate Lao Furen’s wish, so he nodded and said: “Then
we will comply with Lao Furen.”
An
hour later, all of the precious treasures in the storeroom were delivered into
the hands of Li Wei Yang.
Lao
Furen pulled her to her side and instruct her: “These are what Bixia rewarded
to you, you must watch over it. Do not let anyone rip you off. Although you did
well on this matter, in the end you stuck out like a sore thumb, a bit of bad
can bring fatal disaster, seek not to be meritorious but only to avoid blame. In the future you must act cautiously, understand?”
These
are all advices from the heart. Li Wei Yang rarely received such care from her
grandmother, her eyes turning red.
Lao
Furen smiled, patted her hand and said: “Silly child, the upper hand on the
high position, is instantly a matter of heaven and hell. Today has really
scared these old bones of mine. You were too daring; you actually dared to act
in a slick way in from of Bixia. However, filial piety is always right, after
being titled third rank decent lady, your mother’s days would be better.”
“Thank
you Lao Furen for not blaming me.” Li Wei Yang stretched out her hands around
Lao Furen’s arm, tears falling drop by drop on the ground, leaving a string of
watermarks.
Luo
Mama quickly passed over a handkerchief, smiled and said: “San Xiaojie don’t
cry, you are now the wealthiest Xiaojie in the city!”
Li
Wei Yang was surprised for a moment, then immediately laughed.
Yes,
the things rewarded by the emperor, aside from those that could not be moved but
only used to furnish and decorate, half of them were gold. These with
respects to her future, were more useful than anything else!
Da
Furen soon got a letter from Li Xiao Ran. Filled with anger and rage, she turned
and went to Li Chang Le’s Yan Yu Ge. Upon reaching her yard, Tan Xiang
hurriedly came out, speaking with hesitation: “Da Furen, Xiaojie….Xiaojie is
not feeling well---”
Li
Xiao Ran was hosting a banquet tonight in celebration for Li Wei Yang. All the high
officials and noble lords would come. And at this time Li Chang Le was sick?! Da
Furen’s face turned incomparably stony. This good-for-nothing!

Thanks for the new chapter! Li Xiao Ran is truly blind and biased to his favorite wife and daughter.
ReplyDeleteI have just read all chapters in one go..I couldn´t stop once I started. Thank you so much for translating this novel!
ReplyDeleteI think that first sentence from Chang Le should be "I won't let you off," or "I'm not going to let you off." It's a threat, not a theoretical.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteThat father of her is really biased . Thanks a lot for the hard work on translating this novel. Thanks naomi for the the kindness
ReplyDeleteWow... is this the first time Wei Yang cry in front of another in this lifetime? Glad to see her still capable of showing emotion to those close to her heart.
ReplyDeleteYeah, right? She's not heartless. She still lets people in, she's just very, very careful about who she gave her trust to these days. Sure, it's cathartic to watch her half-sister and other annoying family members get their comeuppance, but I have to admit that I also like seeing her interactions with her grandmother. This is what family should be like.
DeleteWith all these people always stepping on her, belittling her and trying to make her feel smaller than her actual worth (not that it would work on a mature woman instead of a naive child), it's good to see that there's still people who treat her like _family_.
Thanks for the chapter!
ReplyDeleteHaha can't wait for them to die off
ReplyDeleteThank you for the chapter~
ReplyDeleteI love this novel ♥ And I miss Li Min De♥
You know, I don't understand ancient chinese people. The father is so clearly biased only towards his main wife and main wife's children, why did he even take concubines in the first place? The main wife's son is the oldest child, after all, right?, so he already had an heir. It's just so unfair to those women and their children.... :(
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chapter!
Because in that era/setting there's no negative views for polygamy, even expected for men of the father's means. Consider that infant mortality was also very high and many children didn't survive to adulthood. It's quite common for servants/ladies in waiting to end up being concubines (and some of the girls wish/aim so because it would elevate their status and fortunes, like Wei Yang's previous servant). For princes/emperors, concubinage was also a political matter. Many in this story take concubines just because the girl is pretty and young though.
DeleteOh. There's also the factor of rigid social status/stratification. If the girl is too 'low born' compared to the man, being a concubine is as good as it could get/considered a solution. And the belief that many children = prosperity/blessing = many wives because there's a limit how many times a woman could give birth in this high infant/mother mortality world.
DeleteI'm not excusing Li Xiao Ran. One of the reasons why I love Wei Yang is because how the story/MC handles the whole concubinage thing compared to all the other ancient china novels with emperor/prince love interests (With multiple concubines/wives. Which is a bit of a turn off for my decidedly modern sensibilities!).
DeleteLi Xiao Ran's personality and reasoning is actually explained later in the story, though it's not explained for some time, I think. The custom of concubinage doesn't necessarily get explained outright, but the marriage alliances that get built up through it kind of do.
DeleteThe Li family's circumstances get built up into a complete picture over time, and it's a very dark one but also considered pretty run-of-the-mill familial bickering in context of the story. I'm not sure it's translated very well, but for example, Wei Yang's mother is referred to as 'Qi Yiniang', the seventh concubine. Only two other concubines are referred to as living at the moment, and only Si Yiniang, the fourth concubine, managed to raise children long enough for them to grow into teenagers. There's notably no mention of what happened to the rest of them for the moment.
That said, specifically with regard to why to have more daughters, it's already explained early on with Wei Yang's past life: she was used as a 'stepping stone' for Chang Le to become the empress, along with the rest of her sisters.
Chang Le is worth more on the surface as a marriage partner because because she has two aristocratic families backing her, the Li family and the Jiang family, and she's also incredibly beautiful and accomplished in a woman's education (stuff like music, poetry, leisure/entertainment activities). Marrying her means you get to influence the prime minister Li Xiao Ran AND the Jiang family, which is powerful in a different way.
Meanwhile, Wei Yang, Chang Xiao and Chang Xi don't have mothers from powerful families, so in order to bind an alliance, they're not worth as much; the Jiang family has no interest whatsoever in their well-being. Si Yiniang is pretty devious and able to protect herself and her children, but Qi Yiniang is absolutely not, which is a large part of why Wei Yang starts off in such dire straits.
As daughters of an aristocratic family without a secondary familial backer, their value is low not just because they aren't trueborn but because they are generally automatically considered more 'disposable' by the family they come from. Wei Yang especially didn't come from a mother who was loved by her father; her father has little to no interest in her well-being, which means she has limited power to be a guiding hand behind the scenes, at least from the outside. This makes her an undesirable marriage partner for anyone particularly highborn (like the princes), which for a female in Dali is tantamount to a death sentence.
Having numerous children gives the family more power to make alliances and also gives them more chances to earn merits like Wei Yang's 'An Ping Xianzhu' title. Having additional children is almost always encouraged by the family's dowager/grandmother, even if they're from concubines. It also protects the family against disaster if they lose some chess pieces. This is a period drama. A lot of children don't live long enough to be useful to the family, or die before they can truly be a pillar for their family, like Wei Guo Furen's eldest son.
There is actually an additional reason here other than just favoritism if I remember correctly. The implications actually makes things worse. Wei Yang's mother was originally a servant but Li Xiao Ran was drunk one night and ... well it's basically rape.
DeleteCan I be cheeky to ask anyone to just spoil a bit and explain LXR character/reasoning?
DeleteI mean, LXR's personality is partly laid out already. Da Furen told Chang Le after the red ginseng incident that LXR was losing faith in her and would be willing to use any of the other daughters or even his niece (Chang Ru) as a marriage pawn to make the Li family the empress' family.
DeleteDa Furen was just saying this to scare Chang Le into not being so stupid, but it's also true. Once a woman is married into the royal family, that woman has to be able to protect herself and her children. External family members can only help so much. Chang Le is beautiful and skilled in [琴棋書畫] (direct translation: music/zither, chess/Go, books/calligraphy/handwriting and painting), meaning she's accomplished in terms of a woman's education, but in terms of politics and sabotage, she's obviously far behind her mother. This is mostly because she's been protected from all harm by her parents and spoiled to the point she can't even take the smallest hint of disrespect, leading to her grudge against Wei Yang in the first place. This is a dangerous temperament for an empress to have in an unstable environment, which is what Lao Furen is calling LXR on in this chapter.
In Wei Yang's past life, they kept Chang Le out of the fray while the princes were duking it out (mostly-- that's a long story in and of itself). After Wei Yang destroyed everyone else and was the only threat remaining, they married Chang Le into the royal family. After Chang Le had a son to claim the spot of crown prince, they (along with several others) orchestrated Wei Yang's demise so Chang Le could become the empress instead.
Marrying the Li family into the royal family (whose son subsequently becomes the heir to the throne) is LXR's primary goal. LXR does favor Chang Le, not just because she's his firstborn daughter, but because her incredible beauty and family background make her a very valuable chess piece. However... he does view her as a chess piece. Da Furen is right: if he loses Chang Le for whatever reason, he would just switch her out for another daughter. LXR looks out for number one.
LXR and Wei Yang are actually very similar people but have different goals and methods. Wei Yang was born in the second month, and Dali superstition says that girls born in the second month are a curse to their families. LXR is actually superstitious (as most people in Dali are) and because of this, he threw her out of the house as a baby. Instead of feeling straight up guilty about it, he justifies that to himself and feels self-righteous instead. Since he didn't see her grow up, he has formed no attachment to her whatsoever. He also tends to feel threatened by the reincarnated Wei Yang because of how smart and unpredictable she is. Therefore, his treatment of her is kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy and he is blind to her merits.
Thanks for the chapter ≧ω≦
ReplyDeleteThank you for the chapter 💖
ReplyDeleteThank you for the chapter.
ReplyDeleteReading this, and how Lao Furen stood up for LWY, feels soo Good! Finally, a stroke of good luck for her financial /dowry prospect, as well as marginally improving her mother's wellbeing.
thanks!
ReplyDeleteurgh, her father is horrible, not to speak of da furen! hmphhh!
lao furen, you're so aweome, ayeee!
Dude you hold such a high positon in the ministry, pobably earning loads anf yet acting like money is tight ! Going so far as to try and steal from your own daughter ! Where did lao gaurenteed go wrong in raising you ! Man have some shame. What sort of parent finds their children's prosperity annoying and are full of jealousy ? Clearly the worst sort. :/ Meh, your future aint too bright.
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't seem to be doing it primarily for the money. That is his wife's reason. The wife is doing it due to greed, jealousy and maybe some other things. Li Xiao Ran is angry over the fact that Wei Yang isn't giving him much respect. His actions does make it difficult to believe how he can be prime minister. Then again things might not be going that well in the country if there is so much corruption based on what Wei Yang said and they was witness by her in the previous life.
DeleteIf LXR could really see, he would ditch LCL and pin all his hopes on LWY. But it's a good thing that he's so stubborn and biased towards LCL, this way we get to see them both go down together ( I hope ). Thanks for the chapter!
ReplyDeleteA thing i noticed was it's all favoritsm the father towards his eldest daughter for whatever reasons but the grandma too the empress dowager too how did wei yang catch their eyes she molded her exterior to their preference makes me wonder how many times feeling can be manipulated, the grandma had li chang le actually proven to be cunning and useful and beneficial to li familly i wonder how she would feel towards her
