The Rise of Web Dramas?

January 11, 2016

Recently, instead of watching full-length episode dramas, I've started watching mini web dramas instead. The episodes usually range around 15 to 20 minutes in length and the production budget is low so it is incomparable to large budget dramas such as Nirvana in Fire and Legend of Zhen Huan.

To balance things out, the production would either lack in one area such as a good-looking/talented cast, eye-catching sceneries, extricate costumes, or a superb script.

Web dramas allow low-budget production teams to film entertaining dramas for their audience and also give them a chance to do something they enjoy even if it doesn't get the attention that many grand productions receive.

Noble My Love

Number of Episodes: 20 episodes
Episode Length: ~15 minutes
Link to Review: Noble My Love Review

Watching Point:
- The good-looking main leads
- The fast-pace storyline
- The lack of secondary characters that hinder the fun of a drama

What It's Lacking:
- The budget for a realistic set such as the office of a CEO
- The jewelry/clothing for a noble/high-class feel

Go Princess Go!

Number of Episodes: 35 episodes
Episode Length: ~20 minutes
Link to Review: Go Princess Go Review

Watching Point:
- Good-looking cast that knows how to act
- The fresh/interesting storyline
- The sparkling chemistry between main leads
- The humor

What It's Lacking:
- The budget for eye-catching sceneries and extricate costumes
- It might turn off some viewers due to the fact that the man travels back into the body of a woman who is paired with a man

Naughty Princess

Number of Episodes: 40 episodes
Episode Length: ~20 minutes

Synopsis: (credits to MyDramaList)
Yin Qin Rou is a 21st century woman who gets thrown into the past and lands on a prince (literally). Suspicious of her origins, the prince, Xie Yan Qi, keeps her captive. Slowly, her 21 century attitude and disregard for authority changes him and he begins to fall in love with her. Meanwhile, there is turmoil in the royal family. The second prince assassinated his older brother to be next in line for the throne. All that's left in his way is Yan Qi, the third prince. Can Qin Rou protect him? And what if Qin Rou isn't the only time traveler...

Watching Point:
- The lead actress is pretty and adorable
- The storyline - It's also fresh since the time-travel element is banned in China
- I like the theme song, it's not bad

What It's Lacking:
- A good-looking cast --- the main lead is more than ten years older than the actress. He is not ugly but he is not that attractive based on my own opinion
- An engaging plotline
