Drama Review: Momentary Lapse of Reason TVB (收規華)

November 28, 2015

Synopsis:
This drama takes place in Tong Sai during the 1930s, an era of corruption and human trafficking. Kam Wah (Louis Cheung) is a corrupted officer from the start who takes bribes and collects tributes from commoners. But he begins to change when he meets righteous cop Sum Yat Yin (Matt Yeung) and gets embroiled in the investigation of human trafficking. As he finds his conscience, he gets closer to and develops a crush on Leung Sam (Tavia Yeung) who has taken a vow of celibacy yet fell in love with Yat Yin. Leung Sam and her childhood friend Fa Ying Yuet (Rosina Lam) were both victims of child trafficking who became separated from their family but each went down a different path. Ultimately, the four joins together to counter the mastermind behind the human trafficking organization.

My Rating:
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ 9/10 stars

This is one of the best, if not the only watchable, drama produced by TVB this year. From the beginning to end, the drama did not lose focus; it started strong and it ended stronger. Besides the story, the cast did a splendid job and this may be because of how some characters were written. This drama is more of a breakthrough for Louis Cheung, Rosina Lin, and Matt Yeung. Tavia Yeung once again plays a gentle and soft-spoken character but she does extremely well that you can't dislike her goody-two-shoes character.

Definitely a must-watch! Not an idol drama and the ending was well-written though it's not the typical happy ending you would expect.
(-1) Tavia's character represents the goodness in humanity
but I still dislike such vaselike characters.
I personally like Rosina's character more.

Louis Cheung as Kam Wah
Tavia Yeung as Leung Sam
Matt Yeung as Sum Yat Yin
Rosina Lin as Fa Ying Yuet
Lau Kong as Chong Ngou Shan
Akina Hong as Ho Wan Fong

Timothy Cheng as Lui Kwok
Hugo Wong as Lui Yu Wai
Koo Kung Chung as Ng Sai Cheung
Willie Wai as Shek Gau
Candy Chang as Lam Choi Dip
Brian Burrell as James Charlton
Amy Fan as Gu Sau Hing

Thoughts:
1. First of all, excellent acting from the main cast and the veterans. The actors are all talented and can actually act unlike the pageant winners. I watched this for Tavia but eventually liked watching all four main characters equally.

2. Each character has their own story and their stories link to the overall plot and contributes to the general story. It is not just a story created just to give the character some background.

3. The ending is bittersweet/open. It is seen that Kam Wah didn't lose his memory but he has decided to silently stay by Leung Sam's side and become her guardian angel. I also liked the endings for the villains especially Chong Ngou Shan's second wife and son tried to outsmart each other but they couldn't outsmart fate.

4. I don't know if the writers did this purposely but they named Tavia's character Leung Sam which sounds similar to "conscience" in Cantonese. As Kam Wah begins to change, he becomes closer to Leung Sam, thereby indicating that he is gaining his conscience back. When Yat Yin decided to marry Lam Choi Dip in order to gain power, he loses Leung Sam, which means he is slowly losing his conscience by using Choi Dip.

5. The story also places emphasis on bromance and sisterhood but more on the former which is evident in the last few episodes. I really enjoy seeing how Kam Wah steps out each time to help Yat Yin and eventually succeeds. I do wish dramas can also show sisterhood exists in reality and not just catfights between females especially in harem-scheming series.

6. There is this one scene that stuck particularly on my mind. It was the scene where Kam Wah finds the body of his little friend who was inhumanely buried alive by the child traffickers. Louis's crying skills were superb and that scene was really emotional. It must have been because that the boy that played the character is a good actor and made as fell in love with this adorable character.

6. After this series, I've became a fan of Louis Cheung, Matt Yeung, and Rosina Lam. I've always been a fan of Tavia and I wish she would be given more challenging roles. I'm glad she played this role because if given to the wrong actress, this role can be annoying and difficult to like. But since it's Tavia, she did her job well and this is my favorite role of hers out of all the series she's starred in.

7. Definitely give this a try even though the cast doesn't seem appealing. The acting, the storyline, and the context should definitely persuade you to give it a try!
